Information on a compost system?

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
Hey, it's great to see you back again. Make sure you've subscribed to my RSS feed -- it will help you know when to return for more great info ;)

Does anyone have any information on the process of building a pretty in depth compost system, potentially at a summer camp? Also, how much would a project such as this cost?

The basics for composting are:Organic waste – newspaper, leaves, grass, kitchen waste (fruits, vegetables), woody materials ;
Soil as a source of microorganisms;
Water; & Air to provide oxygen
http://home.howstuffworks.com/composting1.htm

To ensure good aeration and drainage, put down a 3-inch layer of coarse plant material, such as small twigs.
Add about 8 to 10 inches of leaves or other dry organic wastes from your landscape and/or kitchen.
Provide nitrogen for compost-promoting microorganisms by adding 2 to 3 inches of fresh grass clippings or fresh manure. If fresh nitrogen sources are unavailable, add about one-third cup synthetic fertilizer (36-0-0) per 25 square feet of surface area.
Add a sprinkling of soil to each layer to inoculate the pile with microorganisms.
Moisten the pile, but try not to get it too soggy. Turn the pile every so often to keep it from matting & to add oxygen. Don’t use meat products.

Making a compost turner using salvaged materials. I’d add some holes in the container for more air/oxygen. You might get creative & use a large plastic garbage can for a tumbler.

It’ll cost you mostly your time & effort if you use materials you find in the environment or materials that can be recycled or donated. It really doesn’t have to be an elaborate set up.

Good luck!!! Hope this helps.

How can I make my own compost?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

I’m only 15 years old, and can’t afford buying a compost. How can I make my own compost? Or where could I find a cheap compost bin? And how do composts work?
Does it need to be spring or summer for a compost to work? Or can it work during the winter and fall also?

This is great! In bio class, we’re working on a project to reduce CO2 and making a compost pile is one way to do it too!
My friend’s experiment involved constructing a three sided crate from wood to hold the compost in. He then threw the dead leaves, dried grass, sticks and other decomposable material into it.
But the question is do you have a big yard? if you do then this crate will be a great thing to make compost out of. My house has a compost crate and it has tons of fertile soil!

Compost piles: when you pile layers of decomposable (natural) materials and leave it to decompose, you will get fertile soil. This is because the bacteria that breaks down the stuff has oxygen to survive. ( unlike garbage piles, which can be dozen feet high, there is no longer oxygen once you get below 8 – 9 feet so the bacteria cannot live so they do not decompose the trash we throw out: even if it is a decomposable plate or some dead leaves.)
Just make sure you turn your pile over once in a while to help oxygen get into the pile for those bacteria!

here’s a list of things to make compost useable:
http://www.compostguide.com/
you don’t necessarily need to buy one of these things.

Good luck! You don’t know how beneficial this is for you and your community.

El Huerto, Centro de Ecologia y Artes

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

El Huerto, Centro de Ecologia y Artes (The Orchard, Center for Ecology and Arts) is a project taking place in Tacámbaro, Michoacán, Mexico, 45 minutes south of Patzcuaro.

In 2001, artist Artemio Rodriguez discovered that a few blocks from the house where he was raised in his native Tacámbaro was a large piece of land, approximately three acres, surrounded by houses and which had been abandoned for thirty years. The land has many trees and a natural spring. The main entrance is an adobe house which is in ruins.

Rodriguez learned that the property was owned by a local cooperative, MICASA, a general food store. He became part of the cooperative and subsequently president of the commission of education and ecology. He was then able to propose a plan for the use of the land. In March of 2008 the project was approved by the general embly and a few weeks later work was begun on rebuilding the adobe house.

The following is brief outline of the project:
1. Rebuild the adobe house using traditional building techniques and local materials to install a printmaking studio which will be open to the local community and also serve to fund a program of artists in residence.

2. Create an art gallery, a library dedicated to art and ecology, a store to sell local products, crafts, art and books.

3. Build a botanical garden to preserve native trees and plants, including orchids. Put in place a large compost to process the organic waste that the cooperative produces.

4. Build a large pond to make use of the water spring, and install a traditional hydraulic system which will distribute the water to the whole terrain.

5. Create a children’s library.

So far, the only economic support for this project has come from the cooperative ($30,000) and they are looking for money to continue the rest of the work.

Can I compost shredded paper?

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

I plan on bedding my chickens in it first and I hate to throw away all that good chicken manure.

Yes, it can be added to compost.

Shredded paper will add another carbon source for the bacteria and other decomposer-critters in your compost pile.
The shreds are a nice balance to the "greens" (nitrogen-rich material) you put into your compost pile.
http://mcrecycles.blogspot.com/2007/03/composting-another-way-to-recycle.html

"Browns provide the carbon — the energy — to the mix. These are typically dry, bulky materials like paper, straw, dry leaves or woodchips.
Greens are wet and rich in nitrogen. Items such as kitchen scraps, grass clippings, and green leaves provide protein for microbes. Fresh shrub cuttings are balanced; they provide both carbon and nitrogen. A general rule of thumb is 1 green to 4 brown by volume, though opinions vary."

Good Luck! Hope this helps.

How long does it take for compost to become useable?

Friday, July 24th, 2009

How long does it take for your compost to all mix together to be used in your garden? Also, should you put soil into your compost, because in pictures ive seen they just look like normal soil.

Hello Itchy-roe,

The time it takes to get useable compost depends on:

* The type and quantity of materials in your bin.
* The time of year.
* How often you turn your compost.

Compost will usually take between 6 and 18 months to be produced.

When your compost is ready it will be crumbly and dark brown. You should not be able to recognise the original materials that were put into the bin, although some twigs and egg shells may still be visible.

There are a number of different uses for your home compost.

* Mulch – a layer of compost can be applied to the surface of soil. This will add nutrients, helping to encourage plant growth.
* Soil conditioner – mix compost into the soil to improve structure and add nutrients.
* Lawn conditioner – mix an equal amount of sand and fine compost and spread over your lawn.
* Seed and potting mix – mix equal amounts of soil and compost. Experiment to find out the best proportions.
