We were the first group to take the Permaculture Design course at granja TIXIB!
It took place during the whole month of August, fortunately enough I found sponsors other wise I would have not been able to take the course. With meals included and accommodation in a tent/cabin it costs 1,500 USD.
The course is thought in English because is sold all over the world. This turned out to be a little challenging for some teachers and some students because it created a language barrier for deeper levels of communication, well some times we ended up speaking in Spanish.
We learn many things, including basic training and practice of consensus, and a class in non violent communication. There was a teacher who taught about soils and compost tea. A lecture in Deep ecology and a Visit to the ecovillage HUEHUECOYOTL complemented the course. We built an a frame, a table and a tiny chinampa. We also modeled a self sustaining ruf, prepared cob for a chicken coop and actually started it. We did compost and chore activities of a farm. Also visited several places like the mountains, a center for dry compost toilet development, and an archaeological site called Xochicalco.
Some other things were planned that we never did, and we also did other things that were never planned, but so it’s life, hard to predict.
Any way, I hope you enjoy the pictures and take some time to spend in a farm, grow you own food, compost or just visit some of this beautiful places

I’m looking for a way to do a compost pile, but an easy way. I have 5 kids and am away a lot, so I’m looking to do something that is easily maintainable. Also, Perhaps a list of what can and cannot be composted. Thanks!
cute ski. You may be trying to be a smart ass, but still. cute. You gave me a chuckle.
EDIT- How about this? I have rabbits. Can I put when I clean the cage can I put that in?? I use wood chips and of course they have their droppings. Or is that a no no?
wow..I just realized how crappy I asked the added question. Sorry about that. Mind F today for me.
well if you want to "do" a compost pile maybe you should buy it a drink first!

Louise Halestrap uses the smallest amount of petrol possible to get around mid-Wales. She is a distance learning tutor for the University of East London, who spent her career studying almost everything decomposing, from dead fish and abattoir waste, antibiotics produced in eggs, headache pills, nappies, TNT and pesticides in the soil, sewage, household waste… She has worked in Organics Research and Development for a radical Cleanstream recycling (source separation) company- that plan to extract the ‘wealth from waste’ in Ceredigion. During her 7 years at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth she led the consultancy services on solid waste management and water treatment, conservation and recycling, managed the composting and sanitation research programmes including: live testing of home composting as a waste minimisation strategy; social factors involving householder participation in composting, ran specialist courses on Composting and Sewage Solutions and lectured to a wide range of students. Prior to her work with CAT Louise was Director of Research for a commercial composting company and a research scientist in the large scale composting sector. She has been Chair of Cylch (the Wales Community Recycling Network), adviser to the Composting sub-group at the National embly in Cardiff and the on steering group for the Powys Zero Waste.

I live in a rental property so we aren’t allowed to grow a veggie garden, but I’d like to start a compost bin to get rid of left over vegetables and fruit etc. Can I make a compost bin without having to actually use the compost on my garden?
Yes of course you can. But do you have a place to put a composter that won’t kill the lawn and upset your landlord?
And what will you do with the compost once you have it? Do you have a friend who can use it in their own garden?
Or maybe you can use it in planters or if you have a flower bed in front of the house?

am wishing to level the lawn in places and this compost dirts is basically manure and have spread it over areas of the lawn , some areas fescue , the other areas are bermuda.
have also spread out fescue seed and raked it in with the composted dirt and have the sprinkler running water over it for atleast 30 minutes a day.
the thing I am worried about is the grass underneath , I am guess may not grow through the composted dirt and simply die?
Anyone with experience of this could give me some suggestions please?
Thanks for your answers!
Well, that was how I fixed my lawn was to fill the ruts in with dirt or compost. I did this in the fall…it took a while for the grass to fill in but, if the grass underneath dies the grass on the sides will fill it in, it just takes time. And now my back yard does not have deep ruts in it anymore.
You can also dig up the grass that will be underneath and then put in the compost and then lay the grass back on top of the compost. The grass will re root, this is done all the time on gold courses…when a golfer creates a divot, they simply get the grass that came up with their club and put it back in the hole they created.

Obtain a worm bin.
* These can be purchased from many online vendors or your local gardening or farm supply store.
* You can build your own. Use rubber storage totes, galvanized tubs, wood, or plastic.
Material: Rubber is cheap, easy to use and durable. Galvanized tubs are somewhat costly but will last forever. Wood will eventually be eaten, and plastic cracks easily, but either will do in a pinch.
Drilling holes to ventilate a rubber tub.
Ventilation: Your bin should be well-ventilated, with several 1/8 inch (3mm) holes 4 inches (100mm) from the bottom (otherwise the worms will stay at the bottom of the bin and you may drown your worms). For example, you can build a worm bin out of a large plastic tub with several dozen small holes drilled out on the bottom and sides.
o Size: The larger you make the container, the more worms it can sustain. Estimate 1 pound (0.45kg) of worms (1,200) for every square foot of surface area. The maximum productive depth for your bin is 24 inches (61cm) deep because composting worms will not go further down than that.
o Cover: The bin should have a cover to prevent light from getting in and to prevent the compost from drying out. Choose or make a lid that can be removed if your compost is too wet. Use a canvas tarp, doubled over and bungee-corded on, or kept in place with wood. Burlap sacks also work well, and can be watered directly.
* Use 4 old car tires: To make a four-tire wormery, create a base from old bricks or flagstones (must be flat and with as few cracks as possible). Place a layer of heavy newspaper on top of the bricks. Stuff four old tires with newspapers. Pile the tires on top of each other, with the first tire on the Sunday newspaper. Put some scrunched up paper or cardboard in the bottom to soak up any excess liquid. Fill the tire wormery with organic material (semi-composted is best). Add the composting worms (tiger or brandling species are best). Use a piece of board weighed down with bricks as a lid. The lid must be big enough to stop rain getting in. Harvest a tire’s worth of fertilizer roughly every 8 weeks (during warm months).
Shredded newspaper for worm bedding.
Prepare the box for worms. Fill your bin with thin strips of unbleached corrugated cardboard or shredded newspaper, straw, dry grass, or some similar material. This provides a source of fiber to the worms and keeps the bin well-ventilated. Sprinkle a handful of dirt on top, and thoroughly moisten. Allow the water to soak in for at least a day before adding worms. You can also use Canadian peat moss, which is more expensive but yields a loamier vermicompost.
Worms arrive.
Get worms. There are several varieties of worms that that are bred and sold commercially for vermicomposting; just digging up earthworms from your backyard is not recommended. The Internet or local gardening club is your best bet for finding a worm vendor near you. The worms most often used, Eisenia foetida (Red Wigglers), are about 4 inches long, mainly red along the body with a yellow tail. Another variety to consider are Eisenia hortensis, known as “European Night crawlers.” They do not reproduce quite as fast as the red wigglers, but grow to be larger, eat courser paper and cardboard better, and seem to be heartier. They are also better fishing worms when they do reach full size. However, with any non-native species, it is important not to allow them to reach the wild. Their voracious appetites and reproductive rates (especially among the red wigglers) have been known to upset the delicate balance of the hardwood forests by consuming the leaf litter too quickly. This event leaves too little leaf letter to slowly incubate the hard shelled nuts and leads to excessive erosion as well as negatively affecting the pH of the soil. So, do your best to keep them confined!
Feed your worms fruit and vegetable scraps and refresh the bedding as necessary.

Interested in building a compost bin? There are so many different ways that you can build a compost bin it can be easy to become confused.
First, consider your budget when deciding how you want to approach building a compost bin. A more elaborate compost bin, usually made of lumber, is naturally going to be more expensive to build than building a compost bin that is less complicated. One of the reasons for this is that you will need to make sure that you use only pressure treated lumber when building a compost bin. Anything other than pressure treated lumber or wood that is naturally resistant to rot will begin to decompose over time along with your waste materials.
You can build a compost bin from a barrel or a drum. If you have a barrel or drum or can obtain one cheaply this is an easy and inexpensive way to build a compost bin. All you have to do is drill some holes and you can then begin adding your waste materials directly to the barrel or the drum. If you want to go a step further you can also install a crank when you build a compost bin. This will make it easier to turn your waste materials periodically during the composting.
Wooden pallets can also be used for building a compost bin. You should be aware that if the wood that is used in the pallets is not treated then the compost bin may not last very long; however. Along the same lines, wooden snow fencing can be used to build a small compost bin as well. You will need to use either metal or wooden support stakes to hold the fencing upright.
You can also use a plastic barrel or tub for building a composting bin as well. As is the case when using a drum you will need to make sure that you drill holes into the plastic. This is essential because it will allow your compost materials to receive proper ventilation as well as allow for proper draining when you add water to the mixture.
Of course, keep in mind that a compost bin is not a necessity to composting. If there are no regulations where you live and you have enough distance away from your home you can easily use a simple compost pile and place some wire mesh or fencing around it to keep pests away.
