While I wouldn’t be …
While I wouldn’t be unhappy if those weeds continued to set seed in my garden (they are useful for chicken feed, compost etc) they are not particularly good vegetative reproducers and didn’t have ripe seed ont them. I keep trying to get my friends/family to give me grass clippings but I just can’t get them… obviously I don’t have a lawn at this place & if I did I’d be planning to get rid of it:) This particular heap did get pretty hot (white ash) and I turned it not long after I made it.
and contrary to …
and contrary to belief you can add grass clippings.. just let them dry first and add with manure or coarser green to keep the air flow.. the clipping tend to settle and make an almost air tight layer.. i had one o the crappy plastic compost heaps and didn’t stir it enough and after 6 months i still found a pocket of corn (from corn whiskey i make) that looked almost like i added it yesterday (didn’t smell like that though) so air is the big thing
your better off …
your better off pulling the weeds out and knocking the soil off.. as lots of weeds wont die from being cut off.. and it will also add more organic matter to the heap… also the layer system might cause anaerobic digestion.. something you don’t really want in a compost heap.. you want lots of air.. things will rot faster and wont smell… keep it moist and stir regularly.. any large stick wack through a mulsher or lay it on the ground and run over it with the mower..
